Tottenham must aim higher than Nathan Ake as they search for a new centre-back this summer.
That’s according to former West Ham striker Frank McAvennie, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about Ake’s future.
A Man City source has told Football Insider that the club will listen to offers for Ake in the upcoming transfer window.
Ake, 26, joined Man City last summer in a £40million transfer from Bournemouth.
It is also understood that Tottenham are targeting a new centre-back as a priority in the upcoming transfer window.
McAvennie has questioned why Tottenham would sign a defender that can’t break into Pep Guardiola’s side.
“Wow, really? I think they need someone better than him,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.
“If one of the best coaches in the world doesn’t rate him I don’t know why Spurs would want him.
“[John] Stones was out for a while and he’s come back in so maybe Ake will be like that.
“Just the fact that Man City signed him says a lot. If he’s not been playing at City you’ve got to be worried.
“Any other club would be ok but City have some excellent defenders. If he’s not playing now I can’t see him getting back in.”
Ake has only made 12 appearances for the Premier League winners after a season blighted by injury.
He recently returned from a spell on the sidelines and played at left back as City lost to Chelsea last weekend.
