Paris Saint-Germain superstar Kylian Mbappe could make history in Ligue 1 next season if he remains at the Parc des Princes.
Mbappe was on the scoresheet as PSG slumped to an underwhelming 3-2 home loss to Clermont on the final Ligue 1 weekend, taking his league tally in 2022/23 to 29 goals.
The 24-year-old’s relentless scoring form earned him the Golden Boot award in France’s top flight for the fifth season on the bounce, equalling Jean-Pierre Papin’s outright record.
Les Bleus’ captain was named the Ligue 1 player of the season for the fourth consecutive season last week after leading PSG to a record-breaking 11th top-flight title.
According to Reuters, Mbappe, who has topped the goalscoring charts in Ligue 1 in all five seasons since signing a permanent contract in Paris in 2018, could become the first-ever player to do it six times in a row.
While the Frenchman went toe-to-toe with Lyon captain Alexandre Lacazette for most of the season, he left his more experienced compatriot two goals behind to avoid sharing the prize as he did with Monaco’s Wissam Ben Yedder in 2019/20.
He has recently removed doubts about his future at PSG, playing down Real Madrid links by vowing to honour his deal in the French capital despite another disappointing European campaign.
Mbappe refused Los Blancos’ bid to leave his homeland last summer, renewing his lucrative deal with Les Parisiens, which made him the highest earner in Ligue 1.
But while it was believed the new deal would keep him in Paris until 2025, recent reports indicate it was only a two-year extension with the option to prolong it for a further year.
If it’s true, Mbappe will enter the final year of his contract next season, which could be his last campaign at PSG, with Madrid still harbouring a genuine interest in his services.
The Spaniards’ effort to lure him to La Liga will only intensify after Karim Benzema’s imminent departure.
