Today, Mbappe declared: "I had to be responsible and mature with my decision. I am a leader and I had to make my decision well, so I have measured my words.

"I am playing for PSG and Real Madrid did not have to convince me with players. Messi has arrived this year and Neymar has been injured for a long time. My decision was personal, it had nothing to do with other players.

“Everyone knows that I wanted to leave in the summer and it was the best possible decision at that time. The years change. The context is different now. It is a different context. I know what I can bring to my country, it is a country where I dream of playing. There is also a sentimental part, which is my country. The project has changed. I think my story has not ended here, both in the sporting plan and in the individual."

Mbappe also spoke of the lengthy post he made to Real Madrid fans yesterday.

He addd: "My message spoke for the fans of Real Madrid. I have always dreamed of wearing the Madrid shirt, I got to wear it when I was 14 years old. I hope that everyone understands my choice to continue in my city. I am French."
