Speaking in a media round on Friday, Maya Yoshida (34) revealed his contract details at Schalke and the conditions regarding a stay beyond the summer.
“It’s very simple,” said Yoshida. “If I play 25 games and we manage to stay up, then I’ll stay and my contract will automatically be extended.” Bild reported earlier in the week that should S04 remain in the Bundesliga, then Yoshida will remain at the club because of an automatic extension, which would also happen should the Japan international play 25 games.
Schalke’s vice-captain has already featured 17 times for the Royal Blues this season (15 Bundesliga, 2 DFB Pokal) and is an invaluable member of the squad given his experience gained.
Should Schalke be relegated, then Yoshia would leave. According to Bild, Jordan Larsson, who has a contract with the Ruhr club until 2025, would also depart the club.
S04 are bottom of the Bundesliga and are already five points adrift of Stuttgart, who occupy the relegation playoff. With just two wins in 15 league games this season, Die Königsblauen have conceded 32 goals – only Bochum (36) have a worse defence this season.
