Maya Le Tissier enjoyed a dream debut for Man United –– scoring twice as the Red Devils thrashed Reading 4-0 in their Women’s Super League opener.

All the goals were scored in the first half, with Le Tissier’s first coming courtesy of an audacious back-heel, while her second was a well-directed header from a Katie Zelem corner.

The 20-year-old  joined the club from Brighton this summer, having been a regular starter for the Seagulls the past two seasons.

A versatile and attacking full-back, Le Tissier has been touted for great things and was named in GOAL’s top 10 best young footballers in the world in 2021.

But how much do you know about the English youngster? Has she played for the Lionesses yet and is she related to former Southampton legend Matt Le Tissier?

Here’s everything you need to know about the rising star:

Who is Maya Le Tissier?

Le Tissier grew up in Guernsey and was forced to fly to Hampshire twice a week when she was a youngster because no team around her had a girls’ side.

Contrary to some rumours, Maya has no relation to Matt Le Tissier, although the two families do know each other, with Maya’s father, Darren, playing with Matt as a youngster.

In 2018, she signed for Brighton and joined the academy. Le Tissier was quickly promoted to the first team and debuted on December 5th, 2018,  in the League Cup against Crystal Palace.

Four days later, she made her league debut against Chelsea and scored her first goal in a 3-0 win against Bristol City the following year.

In July of this year, Le Tissier signed a three-year contract with Man United, after the Red Devils triggered her release clause, which was reportedly set between £50,000 and £60,000.

Has Le Tissier played for England?

Le Tisser has represented numerous England age-group sides and captained the U-15 women’s national team.

In September 2018, she was named captain of the U-17s and led England to the European Championships without conceding a goal.

She has also represented the U-19s side and made her under-23s debut at just 19 in a friendly against Belgium last October.

Other WSL youngsters, including Jess Park, Molly Pike and Jessica Naz are also part of the under-23s team.

Despite a number of appearances for the England age-group sides, Le Tissier is yet to earn a cap for the senior England team.

With talented full-backs such as Rachel Daly, Demi Stokes, Alex Greenwood and Lucy Bronze to contend with, the 20-year-old has been forced to bide her time.

Though playing for England one day is surely the goal, Le Tissier did make history back in 2018 when she became the first female player to play for the Guernsey under-16 boys’ team.
