The Athletic reports that Leeds United defender Maximilian Wöber is close to joining Borussia Mönchengladbach on a season-long loan.

Wöber reportedly has a clause in his Leeds contract that allows him to leave the club on loan following their relegation to the Championship last season. The defender did not take part in Leeds’ pre-season friendly against AS Monaco as he made it clear to the club that he would like to leave. Currently, the clubs are also talking over a potential permanent option to the loan agreement.

The 25-year-old only joined Leeds in January for €12m from Red Bull Salzburg but he was unable to help save the team from relegation.

The arrival of Wöber will likely allow Nico Elvedi to leave Gladbach this summer. The Swiss international has attracted interest from Wolves and with his contract expiring next summer, Gladbach will likely have to sell if they want to make any money from the 26-year-old.

Unless Gladbach wishes to reinforce their defence more, then Felix Uduokhai (Augsburg) and Jordan Torunarigha (KAA Gent) are unlikely to join this summer.
