Sheffield United defender Max Lowe has revealed he apologised to his Blades teammates after being distracted by Nottingham Forest‘s interest in the summer.

The 25-year-old spent last season on loan at The City Ground and was targetted by the East Midlands club after they secured promotion to the Premier League via the play-offs.

United stood firm over their reported £5 million valuation of Lowe, who remained at Bramall Lane as a result.

Despite being hamstrung by injury, he’s proven his quality in South Yorkshire this term – bagging a goal and four assists in 10 Championship appearances.

But it appears Lowe is regretful about parts of the Forest saga in the summer.

Speaking to the Sheffield Star, the defender admitted that he was distracted by the interest and revealed he even apologised to his teammates after a poor display against Watford in the opening day defeat.

He said: “It was really difficult back then.

“I’d worked really hard in pre-season to try and let everyone see what I was all about but I’d never been in that situation before, with all the stuff that was going on.

“But from this end, I’ve got to say the manager and (chief executive) Steve Bettis were always really open and honest with me right the way through. I had my head up my own a**e at one point. I think that was pretty obvious at Watford. I apologised to the lads afterwards because that was the right thing to do.

“What really helped was the gaffer sitting down with me and letting me know I was going to be staying here. That he wanted me to stay here. That was a great conversation and I can’t speak fondly enough of him.”

Lowe is likely to be back in action on Friday as second-place United take on Hull City.

The Verdict

It’s important to remember that players are only human and you have to credit Lowe for fronting up and admitting that he was affected by Forest’s interest in the summer.

Ultimately, he remains a Blades player and they’re enjoying the benefits at the moment as he’s hit a rich vein of form after returning from injury.

Having apologised to his teammates after that Watford game, you’d imagine all is forgiven at this point.
