Second-placed Lens came unstuck at Montpellier with English forward Stephy Mavididi netting the only goal of the encounter early in the second half.

THE MATCH

Lens kicked off second in the table and trying to extend their winning away run to four matches. Visiting captain Seko Fofana (5') was the first to let fly and Jonas Omlin got down well to his right to make the save. It was a pulsating opening and Mavididi (7') went close with a curler from just inside the box.

Lens were saved by the post when Valère Germain hit the upright after connecting with a Téji Savanier low centre (8'). Omlin saved well from a Jonathan Clauss free-kick (28') and then at the other end Jean-Louis Leca made a smart stop from Mavididi (31'). Somehow it stood goalless at the interval despite their having been 18 attempts

The deadlock was broken three minutes into the second half (48'). Florent Mollet won the ball back and passed to Savanier. The captain's assist was perfect as he released Mavididi in behind and the English forward was calmness personified as he beat Leca.

Arnaud Kalimuendo's powerful shot for Lens flew just over (59') and then Leca saved well from Germain (64') before Christopher Wooh was denied by Omlin (70'). Montpelliier were reduced to ten men when Jordan Ferri (86') walked for a second yellow card. Lens sub Corentin Jean (88') and midfielder Cheick Doucouré (90+2') both had chances as the visitors failed to equalise.

THE PLAYER: Stephy Mavididi

With Gaëtan Laborde and Andy Delort both sold late in the transfer window, the onus is on the Montpellier forwards to weigh in with goals. Mavididi, 23, hadn't scored since the 2-0 home win over Saint-Etienne on September 12. His third goal of the season won the game and he was a menace to Lens throughout.

THE STAT: 2

Montpellier have lost only two of their last 13 home Ligue 1 games (W6, D5).
