Mauro Zárate has revealed the reason why his 2014 move to West Ham didn’t work out.

The 33-year-old was signed by then-manager Sam Allardyce after a prolific season with Argentinian side Vélez Sarsfield.

However, he failed to settle at Upton Park and was loaned out to QPR midway through his debut season.

He returned to the Irons for the start of the 2015/2016 season, but was subsequently sold to Italian side Fiorentina in January 2016.

Speaking to Argentine paper Clarin, Zárate said disputes about how he was being deployed soured his time in the claret and blue jersey.

“I went to West Ham and started to play well, but then I decided to leave because I didn’t like the position I was playing in,” the former Argentina U20 international said.

The attacker is still playing at a high level having signed for Boca Juniors in 2018.
