Maurizio Sarri has resigned as Lazio’s head coach after just three years at the helm.

The 65-year-old succeeded Simone Inzaghi at the Stadio Olimpico and guided the club to a Serie A’s runner-up spot last season.

But Sarri’s future has been clouded in uncertainty after exiting the Champions League’s last 16 stage and a 12th defeat of the campaign to Udinese.

His assistant Giovanni Martusciello will take over as interim coach.

Ninth-placed Lazio travel to Frosinone on Saturday as they aim to climb the Serie A table while they face Juventus in next month’s Coppa Italia semi-finals.
