Maurizio Sarri has spoken up after Serie A giants Lazio picked up a memorable 1-0 win over Bayern Munich in the first leg of the Round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League.
Ciro Immobile scored a vital penalty in the second half and that proved to be enough for the Biancocelesti, who put in a good defensive performance as Bayern failed to register a single attempt on goal in the game and the pressure mounted on Thomas Tuchel.
Lazio’s win though, proves to be one of the club’s most memorable wins under Sarri, whose side had been a major disappointment in Europe last season and this season has been rather mediocre domestically.
Speaking to Prime Video (via TMW) after the game, Sarri said: “It was certainly the victory of application and suffering. There is satisfaction for having beaten one of the strongest teams in Europe, but also regret for the opportunities at the end.”
Lazio had missed two chances at the end and while Sarri rues missing them, he also revealed a tactical change in the game.
“We had decided to lower the line of pressure and sometimes they lowered us beyond what we thought. They attack with many men but, in moments of lost ball, they could leave something for us.”
When asked about whether Tuchel can borrow a DVD from him about how to defend, Sarri stated that a second leg is yet to come.
“He has won much more than me, he knows very well what he has to do. They are a strong team, even the guys who came off the bench impressed me. Let’s take the victory, with the knowledge that we will go to hell in Germany.”
