Mauricio Pochettino will urge Manchester United to prioritise a move for Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane if he becomes the club’s next manager this summer, The Telegraph reports.

The Argentine is one of the top candidates on United’s manager shortlist. There is uncertainty whether he will continue at Paris Saint-Germain beyond the current campaign.

Pochettino has publicly stated that the club’s hierarchy will decide his fate, and it is now reported that he could be the front-runner to become United’s next permanent manager.

If that becomes the case, the 49-year-old is likely to urge the board to pursue the services of Kane following their strong working relationship at Tottenham in the past.

Kane has been open to a potential reunion, but it was not feasible at Paris Saint-Germain last summer with a star-studded frontline of Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe and Neymar.

They could be reunited at Old Trafford next season, but United may need to pay a club-record sum with Spurs having previously turned down a £130 million bid from Manchester City.

Our view:

Kane has had a superb individual career with Spurs to date. He has bagged a stunning tally of 236 goals from just 368 appearances for the north London club.

Last season saw the best of him. The 28-year-old bagged 33 goals from 49 appearances and created chances for his teammates with a sublime tally of 17 assists.

His displays have dipped this term with only 15 goals and three assists from 32 games. While the figures are still impressive, he has netted just five times in 20 league games.

The speculation has influenced his performances, but he remains a quality striker who could be a game-changer for the Red Devils over the next five or more years.

United have created plenty of scoring chances over the past few months, but their inability to convert some has proved costly in the form of draws and defeats.

Kane would make a big difference alongside Cristiano Ronaldo. He could be tempted to switch clubs if Spurs cannot end their 14-year trophy drought.

The striker’s current deal will end in the summer of 2024. Spurs may seriously consider cashing in if he has no plans of penning a contract renewal.
