Chelsea defender Thiago Silva wore the captains armband a lot last season and he has worn it quite a lot in his Chelsea career, and in his whole footballing career in fact.
He’s a great captain, he’s experienced, a leader on the pitch in terms of by example, and he is a quality player. A great pick for a captain.
So why then has he not been named Chelsea captain or vice-captain this season under Mauricio Pochettino?
Poch has decided to go with Reece James as his permanent pick as captain, and then Ben Chilwell as his vice-captain. These are also good picks, but some people have been surprised that Silva was not picked, understandably.
But Pochettino says that Silva does not need to wear the armband to be a captain on the pitch, because his influence and experience offers that anyway.
You can read the full comment below, but Pochettino says Silva is a captain regardless of wearing the armband.
