Mauricio Pochettino lamented his Paris Saint-Germani’s profligacy in front of goal as they lost the Trophée des Champions to Lille.
Xeka’s goal on the stroke of half time was enough to see Les Dogues lift the silverware for the first time after a game staged in the Israeli city of Tel Aviv.
PSG enjoyed 72% of possession, but yet managed only three efforts on target compared to Lille’s four.
“I think we were the better team on the pitch tonight. But we didn’t take our chances, and to win in football you have to score,” Pochettino said.
“It’s a new season, I’m happy with my players; attitudes, and we’ll be better when we have the full squad available.
“I never doubted any of the players’ commitment. We wanted to win tonight, we did everything to do so, and we played the players who were capable of doing so.”
PSG were certainly understrength for the encounter, with several key men (including Kylian Mbappé and Neymar) not included in the matchday squad.
