Former Premier League goalkeeper Maty Ryan has singed an 18-month deal with AZ Alkmaar after completing his transfer from Copenhagen, the club have announced.

The Australian captain, 30, joins the Eredivisie having played every minute for the Socceroos during the 2022 FIFA World Cup where he kept two clean sheets in the international tournament.

Ryan comes to the club having previously played for Blacktown City and Central Coast in Australia before moving to Europe where he played for Belgium’s KRC Genk and La Liga’s Valencia before joining Brighton & Hove Albion in the Premier League. He then joined Arsenal briefly on loan before moving back to Spain for Real Sociedad and then settling in Denmark for Copenhagen last summer.

Th goalkeeper told his new club’s website he is delighted to join the club and is looking forward to pushing on for the Netherlands side.

He told the club website: “I am very happy to here. Very content. You only have to look at the club and its history once to see that it is a good and ambitious club. There is a lot to play for and I dream of reaching the highest of the highest with the team.”
