It was honours even in the battle between the top two teams in Group A at the World Cup, with Netherlands and Ecuador playing out a 1-1 draw at the Khalifa International Stadium on Friday evening. Cody Gakpo put ex-Bayern coach Louis van Gaal's men in front early on (6'), but Enner Valencia equalised for La Tri in the 49th minute with his third goal of the tournament, putting the Fenerbahçe striker top of the scoring chart. Ecuador came closer to snatching a win than the the defensive-minded Dutch. FCB defender Matthijs de Ligt, who played the full 90 minutes in their opener against Senegal, was an unused substitute.

This Tuesday, 29 November (16:00 CET), Netherlands, Ecuador (both on four points) and Senegal (three) will battle it out for qualification to the round of 16. De Ligt and Co face hosts Qatar, who are already out, while Ecuador take on the West Africans.
