Matthijs de Ligt takes swipe at Juventus over lack of 'ambition'

Matthijs de Ligt has rubbed salt in open Juventus wounds by claiming a lack of ambition from the club was the reason behind his departure.

The Dutchman was a top performer during his time with Juventus, but he opted to make a summer move to Bayern Munich in a €67m deal.

Juventus are currently struggling in Serie A, at least by their usual standards, with a 1-0 away defeat to Monza leaving the Old Lady languishing in eighth place in Serie A. They have won just two of their first seven games, and they only just sneaked into the top four last season too.

Bayern Munich haven’t done all that better since De Ligt’s arrival, with themselves only picking up three wins from their opening seven games, but that hasn’t stopped him taking a swipe at his former club.

“I really enjoyed my time at Juventus but felt the time had come for a fresh challenge,” De Ligt told NOS while with the Netherlands national team ahead of their Nations league matches.

Juve are a great team, but coming here was another step up for me, because Bayern have the ambition to win the Champions League. I didn’t get the sense of that at Juve.”

Despite Bayern Munich’s relatively slow start, De Ligt says the style of football alone has justified his move the Bundesliga champions.

“Bayern Munich are closer in philosophy to what the Netherlands team wants on the field,” he said. “I am very satisfied with how the first two months have gone.”
