Bayern Munich defender Matthijs de Light picked up a serious injury during the DFB-Pokal second-round game against Saarbrucken last night.
The Dutch defender was forced off the pitch before the half-hour mark after apparently hurting his right knee.
In a game where everything went wrong for the Bavarians, as they suffered a shock loss to the third-division German side, De Ligt’s injury was the last thing they needed.
Initial reports suggest the Dutchman might have sustained a medial collateral ligament injury, and he could be out for weeks.
De Light has endured a difficult season, managing only five starts across all competitions after falling down the pecking order. The latest injury setback only adds to his woes.
The Dutchman’s absence is also a major blow for the German champions as it highlights the lack of depth in the backline.
Kim Min-jae is the only reliable centre-back option available at the moment, with Dayot Upamecano sidelined with a hamstring injury.
Joshua Kimmich filled in for the Dutchman as a makeshift centre-back, but Bayern can’t afford to stick with a similar strategy as it will make the team vulnerable due to the lack of depth in midfield.
The defensive crisis has hit Bayern at a crucial time as they face arch-rivals Borussia Dortmund this weekend.
Bayern’s morale could be at a low ebb after prematurely crashing out of the DFB-Pokal.
