Matthijs de Ligt is not an alternative to Jules Kounde

Jules Kounde has been linked to Chelsea for over a year now, and is out in front by some distance as heavy favourite among defenders who could come to Stamford Bridge this summer.

Recent days have cast some doubt on that, after it was announced that Jules Kounde would need surgery.

Football.London’s article today implies that this means that the move is in doubt (which is not what most sources seem to say), and they also point to recent links to Matthijs de Ligt and claim that he’s an “alternative” should the Kounde deal not work out.

We don’t agree. Kounde is coming to Chelsea, if a deal can be agreed with Sevilla, and Chelsea will try to sign de Ligt too. It’s unlikely they end up with both, but securing one won’t prevent them going for the other.

We’re two first team central defenders down now, the fact we’re being linked with buying two should not be a surprise.
