Matthias Ginter will officially be returning to SC Freiburg on a free transfer from Borussia Mönchengladbach this summer.
Ginter came through the ranks at Freiburg as a youth and made his debut for the club in 2012 at the age of 18.
In 2014 he moved to Borussia Dortmund and made over 100 appearances for the club, before moving to Gladbach in 2017.
Back in December it was announced that the central defender would be leaving Die Fohlen when his current contract expires in June, and the likes of Bayern Munich and Inter Milan were linked with his signature.
But almost a decade on from his debut, the 28-year-old is returning to where it all began to play under Christian Streich at Freiburg.
“I wanted to do something very special in my career and there is nothing more special for me than returning to this club and to my home,” Ginter told Freiburg’s official website.
“The development of the entire club, the potential of the team and the special way of communicating with the club officials in the past few weeks – finding all of this in my home can be described as a stroke of luck these days. This overall package just fitted perfectly.”
The details of his contract have not been disclosed.
