Chris Wilder further added to his striking options at Middlesbrough yesterday afternoon as the club secured the signature of Matthew Hoppe.

It is an area that has been targeted for incomings all summer by the Boro boss, who you couldn’t help but feel had began to feel frustrated in his efforts to add firepower to his attack.

Thankfully for Wilder and Boro, the club recently got Finnish international Marcus Forss through the door, and now, another international player has arrived in Hoppe.

The 21-year-old joins the club from La Liga side Mallorca, and has put pen to paper on a contract that will see him remain at the Riverside Stadium until 2026.

Speaking after the announcement that confirmed his arrival, the six-cap USA international had the following message for Boro supporters.

Posting on Instagram, Hoppe wrote: “Honored to join @theboroofficial ❤️.”

“Thank you for the warm welcome and all the support!

“I can’t wait to represent this club. #UTB.”

Hoppe heads to the Championship having had spells in Spain with Mallorca, as outlined above, and in Germany with Schalke.

The forward has made 32 appearances combined in La Liga and the Bundesliga, as well as making a further 35 outings for Schalke’s under-19 and ‘2’ side, who play in the Regionalliga West and 2.Bundesliga respectively.

Quiz: Can you name which club Middlesbrough signed these 25 English players from?

It is good to see that Middlesbrough are finally getting those coveted forwards through the door this summer.

You really feel their lack of firepower last season cost them a play-off place in the end, and this time around, with that added, and a full season under Chris Wilder, the club are looking good for a spot in the top six.

It has been a frustrating start to the season having picked up just one point, and a late cup defeat to Barnsley last night will not have helped morale.

It is another tough test up against Sheffield United this Sunday, and it will be interesting to see if Hoppe gets thrown in for his debut.
