The Americans enjoyed the lion’s share of possession in the first half in Arlington, Texas, but struggled to create clear-cut chances on the poor surface.

Indeed Jamaica’s well-executed pressing game caused problems and led to goalkeeper Matt Turner being forced into a couple of important saves.

It took until seven minutes from time for the Stars and Stripes to make the breakthrough.

Cristian Roldan’s cross from the right side was met at the far post by Schalke attacker Hoppe, after Jamaica goalkeeper Andre Blake had come but failed to deal with the danger.

That was enough to see the hosts progress to face Qatar in Austin on Thursday.

In the earlier game, Canada booked their spot in the last four with a 2-0 victory over Costa Rica.

Goals in either half from Junior Hoilett and Stephen Eustáquio set the Canucks up with a date against Mexico in Houston on Thursday.
