The criticism on the Bayern defense after the 4-2 defeat against VfL Bochum is only increasing. The horrible defensive display is worrying Bayern fans and the people in Germany. As usual, Dayot Upamecano is the center of criticism.
Julian Nagelsmann did not want to single out individual players for the loss against Bochum, rather taking full responsibility. However, former Bayern and Germany legend Lothar Matthäus did not hold his words back in this regard. The 60 years old is particularly critical of the defense, mainly Dayot Upamecano and Lucas Hernandez.
Dayot Upamecano, who came from RB Leipzig last summer to Bayern Munich on a fee of 42.5 million euros, had to deal with a lot of criticism over the past couple of months. According to critics, he is too sloppy and makes too many defensive errors, which clearly shows that he has not justified the price. Matthäus thinks the same.
“I think some of the players are yet to arrive, mainly because of the price-performance ratio. We’re talking about Upamecano, he still seems to be a little shaky, he is out of place in the build-up, as well as the defensive”.
According to Matthäus, Upamecano is familiar with the league, and being a new signing can’t be used as an excuse.
“He’s been here for seven, eight months, how much time do you want to give a player? He’s already gained experience in the Bundesliga.”
“He has already made too many mistakes, in addition to the lack of pace; it doesn’t give his teammates any security either.”
The former Ballon d’Or and World Cup winner also didn’t hold back against Lucas Hernandez. According to the 60 years old, Hernandez and Upamecano haven’t been convincing as defensive leaders.
“They may do their job well in France. In Munich, however, they have to lead and direct the team from behind. And so far they can’t do that at all. They are far too busy with their own game to show leadership qualities.”
