Former Inter Milan midfielder, Lothar Matthäus, trust Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski to surpass Gerd Müller’s 48-year-old 40-goal haul in the Bundesliga this season.

The 75-year-old Müller set this historical record during the 1971-72 domestic season. Lewandowski fell short with just six goals to emulate Muller’s 48-year-old record last season after bagging a total of 34 league goals in just 31 league appearances.

The treble winner might have closed down the gap even further, had he not missed three league games due to injuries and suspension.

The Polish International took his goal tally to 19 goals in just 13 appearances after scoring a brace during their latest 5-2 win against relegation-threatened FSV Mainz 05 at Allianz Arena. The Bavarians came from behind to score five goals in the second half after conceding two before the interval.

And Matthaus sees no reason as to why Lewandowski would not be able to break the record if he continues to score more goals for Hansi Flick’s side.

“Gerd Müller’s record is shaking this season. I am convinced that he (Lewandowski) will break the record,” said the Ballon d’Or winner.

The Spanish sports newspaper Marca recently reported that David Alaba does not want to extend his current contract with the German club, which expires on June 30, and is very likely to sign a preliminary contract with Real Madrid under Zinedine Zidane.

The Spanish club is firm favorite when it comes to Alaba’s potential and preferred new destination. But Matthaus is expecting Bayern head coach Hansi Flick to convince the 28-year-old Austrian defender to stay with the defending Bundesliga champions after offering him a new contract with improved terms.

“Flick wants to keep hold of Alaba 100 percent. I am sure Bayern will be approaching Alaba near the summer again and maybe able to convince him to stay at Bayern beyond June 2021.” The 59-year-old FIFA World Cup winner added.
