Swansea City captain Matt Grimes has highlighted the overall contribution of teammate Joel Piroe in a glowing verdict of the Dutchman.

Piroe recently got back in the goals with his sixth of the campaign last time out, which, whilst not a bad tally, is not the same goalscoring form he had shown in the Championship in 2021/22.

Last season, Piroe bagged 22 goals in the division, for example.

However, although Grimes calls Piroe one of the best finishers he has ever played with, the midfielder was also keen to point out the other facets to the Swans forward’s game.

“I am sure the goal will do him good, but we all know what Joel is about and how good a player he is,” said Grimes, via Swansea club media.

“He is a goalscorer, and he is probably one of the best finishers I have ever played with.

“I train with him every day and some of the goals he scores are absolutely outrageous, and he has produced that in games a number of times. But we have to remember he cannot score every week, and it’s not fair to put that sort of pressure on him.

“He also contributes to the team in many other ways, like his work without the ball his quality in our build-up on it.

Yes No

“But we know he is capable of popping up with goals in key moments, like he did at Coventry and he obviously nearly had another one at the end that Liam Cullen finished off.

“Everyone knows what he is about, he may not have scored as many goals as he did last season but goals will come for him because of his quality and the hard work he puts in.”

Swansea City next take on Reading in Championship action tomorrow evening.

Kick off at the Select Car Leasing Stadium is scheduled for 5:15PM.

The Verdict

This is spot on from Matt Grimes.

Don’t get me wrong, Joel Piroe’s goal record isn’t exactly awful this campaign, but he is absolutely right to point out that Piroe brings plenty more to the game than just his strikes.

His build up play can sometimes be just as important, as can his work-rate.

Having said all of that, regardless of what he brings otherwise, you’d still back Piroe to get well into double digits in terms of goals come the end of the season.
