Swansea City captain Matt Grimes has opened up on their season, suggesting they should be placed much higher than their current place of 15th.

There has been vast improvement once again for the Swans under Russell Martin this season and have been much more consistent than they were at this stage last season.

This is despite limited investment in the playing squad and a style of play that is progressing to be one of the most attractive in the Championship.

However, results are not dependent on how attractive a team plays to football, with Swansea currently sitting in lower midtable.

Speaking to BBC Sport, Grimes said: “We almost feel frustrated that we’re not higher. We’ve got ourselves in a good position being where we are. But very frustrated that we haven’t got more points.

Being within striking position of the playoffs at any point in the season is very good. But if you look at the number of points we’ve dropped, sloppily, we probably deserve more.”

It’s open and transparent from Grimes who is right to be frustrated. Swansea have won the most points from losing positions this season with 14 highlighting the need to sharpen up in games.

They possess plenty of firepower as well which hasn’t really got going. Both Joel Piroe and Michael Obafemi have scored just nine between them so far this season.

There are clear steps that need to be taken from Martin’s side to maintain a promotion push with Grimes aware of the steps his side need to take to ensure they are in the top six come the end of the season.

The Verdict

Swansea have shown at times their capability of being a top six team this season. They have also shown why they finished 17th last season as well suggesting frustrating spells of inconsistency.

However, it seems the issues that need to be ironed out are easily identifiable. Considering the amount of points they’ve won from losing positions this season suggests a need to switch on and impose themselves quickly in games.

This might not be the case all the time because of their patient possession approach and with more confidence and additional quality in the team, it’s ahrd to see Martin’s side not getting better this season.
