On April 4, Mats Hummels posted an emotional video on social media. This time, he wasn’t sharing jokes with his followers or the occasional analysis of games he was watching. He was announcing his retirement at the end of the season.

Hummels has enjoyed success in the Bundesliga with Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich. He is also a World Cup champion with the German national team in 2014, playing a key role at Center Back. He famously scored the winning header against France in the quarter finals, which was enough to make it to the last four.

Hummels has always been applauded for his calmness and confidence on the ball. His long and diagonal balls make him a standout player. His well-timed tackles are also scintillating to watch.

After helping Dortmund reach the Champions League final last season, Hummels departed controversially after falling out with head coach Edin Terzic. Despite also leaving for Bayern in 2016, he returned three years later. Hummels is loved and admired by the BVB faithful.

This season, Hummels is playing for AS Roma. According to reports, BVB want him to be part of their squad for the Club World Cup following the long-term injury to key player Nico Schlotterbeck. There is also a possibility that Mats Hummels can have some role at the club in the future.

However, not everyone is sold on signing Hummels to a short-term contract. Reports have indicated that signing a young, developing player is being considered much more strongly.

BVB head coach Niko Kovac was full of praise for Hummels before the Bayern game. He also addressed their time working together at Bayern:

"“Hummels is an extraordinarily good footballer who has achieved a great deal in his life. He has a great status here at BVB.... From my perspective, my relationship with Mats was good. We clicked interpersonally, even though I had to make decisions and he didn't always play.""Mats Hummels

While having Hummels back is a good way to give a farewell to a player who has made the second most appearances for the club, a future role among the decision makers can be a more wise and rewarding move.
