Germany defender Mats Hummels has hit back at Bastian Schweinsteiger after the ex-midfielder criticised him for his own goal against France.

Hummels was the only player to find the back of the net in the 1-0 defeat, unfortunately beating Manuel Neuer.

“It looks so wooden,”  Schweinsteiger said the following day on German TV.

“I’d have expected that a Mats Hummels could clear that.”

Hummels, though, clearly disagrees.

“I think Basti, as a former player, should be a better judge of how difficult that ball was to deal with,” the defender has told BILD on Friday.

“Every player knows how the ball played into that area can be so hard to defend.

“The own goal against France wasn’t one where I could’ve done much differently.”

Hummels and Germany will want to bounce back from their opening game disappointment immediately when they face Portugal in Munich on Saturday.
