Bild reports that Mats Hummels has had a change of heart and is now favouring extending his contract at Borussia Dortmund for another season.

Hummels’ original deal was set to expire in the summer but he has changed his tune and instead of retiring will likely continue for another season after initial speculation that he may retire at the end of the season. There have already been loose discussions between Hummels and sporting director Sebastian Kehl over a contract extension.

Similar to last season, the finances of the deal will not be an issue, so an agreement could likely be reached quickly. Hummels rejoined Dortmund in 2019 from Bayern Munich for €30.5m, having initially left three years earlier.

This season, Hummels has shown that he still possesses the quality to perform for Dortmund despite his age and has kept Niklas Süle out of the starting 11. For example, in Dortmund’s Champions League quarter-final against Atletico Madrid, despite scoring an own goal in the tie, Hummels assisted Julian Brandt’s opener.
