Mats Hummels claimed Borussia Dortmund were the authors of their own downfall as they fell to defeat at Borussia Mönchengladbach on Saturday.

Denis Zakaria gave the hosts the lead in the 37th minute, and then BVB’s task became even more difficult when midfielder Mahmoud Dahoud was dismissed for a second yellow card five minutes before the break.

“We made our own lives very difficult with the sending-off. The match naturally became extremely difficult as a result,” centre-back Hummels said after the game (via the official club website).

Die Schwarzgelben were without injured attackers Erling Haaland and Marco Reus, and Hummels felt the duo’s absence was keenly felt.

“We were also missing other players in attacking positions. We lacked penetration at times. Nonetheless, we could’ve done better,” the 32-year-old said.

“It was a 50-50 game until the sending-off. We worked quite well defensively and showed willpower in the second half, but we didn’t deliver in the decisive moments.”

It was Dortmund’s second loss of the Bundesliga season, leaving them in fourth place and four points behind leaders Bayern Munich.
