Matias Vecino: “Inter Did Not Stop Me From Being Called Up To Uruguay National Team”

Inter midfielder Matias Vecino has stated that he has had no problems with his club and that the Nerazzurri have not taken any actions to prevent him from being called up for Uruguay during the international break.

Speaking to reporters upon his arrival in Montevideo, as reported by FCInterNews, the 30-year-old made clear that despite the potential problems posed by international travel, he has been released by his club.

Vecino joins up with the Uruguayan national squad, as the majority of Nerazzurri players are also doing with their countries.

Aside from the health risks posed by travelling during the ongoing global pandemic, many clubs including Inter have expressed apprehension at the possibility that players from South American national sides may not be back in time to be available for the league fixtures immediately after the break, thanks to the additional World Cup qualifiers played by South American teams.

Of the controversy, Vecino stated that “It is more what has been released in the media than what happened inside Inter, since no one prevented us from leaving or said anything about it.”

He went on, “It’s true, I talked to some teammates because doubts were starting to arise, but no one had any major problems , even though Maxi [Gomez, Valencia striker] told me that he had some in Spain, but mostly for the third match that makes them lose him for a league match.”

The midfielder also explained the COVID protocols being followed for international travel by Serie A clubs, stating that “You take a swab and return to the team immediately. For us it was all so simple that the club itself made us do the tests to let us travel now.”
