Former Chivas manager Matías Almeyda, currently with San Jose Earthquakes of Major League Soccer, is still a very avid fan of his former club.
In an interview on the ‘Ahora o Nunca’ program on ESPN Deportes, Almeyda was asked to compare Rodolfo Pizarro and André-Pierre Gignac to Chivas star Fernando Beltrán.
“Pizarro was the best player in Liga MX but today, it is Beltrán,” Almeyda claimed.
“Gignac has all the honours, but I would keep this young man (Fernando) Beltrán. He plays football perfectly.”
He also pointed out the biggest difference between Mexican football and MLS: viewership around the world.
“Mexican soccer is not broadcast in Europe. I came to Chivas and I have friends who follow me… if it wasn’t because they are my friends, they would not even know the history that Mexico has.
“People don’t even know about their most popular clubs.
“In Mexico, the first thing they have to do is try to make the matches and the championship broadcast all over the world.
“Today the United States has more stained glass than Mexico in Europe.”
In a poll on a Chivas fan page, though it may be biased, a whopping 83 per cent of fans agreed with Almeyda deeming Beltrán the best player in Mexico.
