Bayern Munich forward Mathys Tel will reportedly not be signing for Manchester United ahead of Monday’s 11pm transfer deadline.
United are believed to have been Tel’s preferred transfer destination even as he continues to draw interest from several other Premier League clubs including Chelsea, Arsenal, Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur.
He rejected a move to Spurs despite the North London club striking an agreement with Bayern over a permanent transfer. Spurs chairman Daniel Levy jetted to Germany to try and persuade the Frenchman to join Ange Postecoglou’s ranks but his efforts were futile.
It was stated that United were eager to sign Tel but only on an initial loan deal with the option to buy him at the end of the season.
A buy option worth around £45m was mentioned.
More recently, Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg confirmed that Tel wanted to join United with “immediate effect” although there were complications with Bayern over terms of a transfer.
Plettenberg pointed out that Bayern wanted more money than United were prepared to offer. Additionally, the Bundesliga giants were keen on the inclusion of an obligation to buy Tel.
Now, RMC journalist Fabrice Hawkins has given an update, indicating that talks between United and Bayern have collapsed and as such, Tel will not be signing for the Red Devils.
Hawkins wrote on X, “Negotiations between Manchester United and Bayern Munich fail.”
“Mathys Tel will not go to Manchester United.”
Hawkins added in a subsequent post, “Bayern Munich have been too greedy in their exchanges with Manchester United.”
“Other clubs are still on the lookout for this issue, including Arsenal.”
It remains to be seen whether there is a late twist to the saga and if not, whether United end up targeting someone else.
Aston Villa’s Leon Bailey is another forward United continue to be linked to.
