Arsenal are looking to bolster their forward department in the January transfer window and Mikel Arteta is confident the Gunners will be able to sign at least one player before Monday’s transfer deadline.
The Gunners made a cheeky bid for Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins, but the bid was rejected immediately. Villa are unwilling to sell Watkins, and it would require a massive bid to lure the England striker away from Villa Park.
Arsenal have been linked with a move for Bayern Munich youngster Mathys Tel, and he is a more realistic target than Watkins.
According to a report from The Independent, the Gunners are keen to sign the 19-year-old striker who has told Bayern that he wants to leave club in search of regular games.
Tel is “very open” to Arsenal move, although Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur are vying for his signature.
Bayern Munich’s sporting director, Max Eberl, has also confirmed that Tel wants to leave.
The youngster previously wanted to stay and fight for his place in the team, but has since had a change of heart.
Eberl confirmed this after Bayern’s 3-1 win over Slovan Bratislava in the Champions League.
He said: “We spoke in December, and Mathys said he wanted to assert himself. Now he has said he would like to leave. Now we have to think about whether we will do it and what we will do.”
Tel appeared to have said goodbye to Bayern fans after the game. Fabrizio Romano has shared a video footage where Tel was seen waving goodbye to the home fans.
Arsenal should make a concrete effort, especially if Villa reject all offers for Watkins. Arteta loves to nurture young talents, and Tel would be a perfect addition for the Gunners.
He is two-footed, skilful, and has the ability to move the ball with pace. The Gunners can also look to sign him on loan with a view to a permanent deal next summer.
