According to David Ornstein of The Athletic, Matheus Nunes has stopped training with Wolves, as he has told the club that he wishes to join Manchester City.
The Citizens are pushing to sign the midfielder before the end of the transfer window on Friday evening, however will face a difficult task, with Wolves already having rejected two bids for the Portuguese international– the latest one of which was worth €55m.
It is understood that Nunes will face disciplinary action over his abandonment of training, but Gary O’Neil’s side intend to have him return to the squad after the window closes, unless a deal is agreed upon between the two sides before then.
Having signed from Sporting Clube de Portugal for €45m just last year, the 24-year-old featured in 34 Premier League games for The Wanderers last season, as he stood out in struggling side under multiple managers. In these matches- and throughout his 101 appearances for Sporting- Nunes has consistently demonstrated his excellent ball carrying and dribbling ability, as he is able make powerful, driving runs with the ball at his feet through the centre of his opposition.
This news comes as City look to fill the void that has been left in their midfield by Kevin De Bruyne- who is set to be out for a around 3-4 months after suffering a ‘serious injury’ in the Premier League opening fixture against Burnley. Consequently, the Treble winners are also interested in Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze, and have also seen a deal fall through for West Ham’s Lucas Paquetá, due to their concerns over the FIFA and FA’s betting investigation into the Brazilian.
