Tottenham had to quickly forget about Thursday's defeat at the hands of Liverpool, and turned their attention to FA Cup action where they travelled to the 'Second City' to take on Aston Villa. Manager Ange Postecoglou still had a limited number of players at his disposal with plenty of names still on the sidelines. Kevin Danso was in the starting eleven for the second game running and on loan Frenchman Mathys Tel was handed a first start. The full lineup was as followed. Kinský, Porro, Danso, Gray, Spence, Bergval, Bentancur, Moore, Kulusevski, Son (c), Tel.
Spurs would get off to quite possibly the worst start ever, when in the very first minute they let Morgan Rogers pick the ball up in the centre of the park and he played a lovely ball to Jacob Ramsey over to the left. The youngster took a left footed shot across goal and it went straight through Kinský's hands and into the far corner. The Czech keeper would have been extremely disppointed himself with that one, he'll know he should have done better. A shocking start for the Lilywhites.
Villa would continue to dominate, and very nearly made it two when Leon Bailey would cut inside onto his favoured left foot and bend his shot towards the far corner that was well saved by Kinský, somewhat making up for his error that led to the opener. Spurs would once again be caught in transition, Malen holding off Danso and just like Rogers for the goal would find Ramsey down that left hand side, although this time he dragged his effort wide of the post. Spurs really struggling to get a hold of this game in the first 20 minutes, and Villa bullying them physically.
A few minutes later and Spurs would finally have a chance of their own, Dejan Kulusevski threaded a beautifiul ball down the line to Mikey Moore and he hit it hard and low across the face of goal for what should have been an easy tap in for captain Heung-Min Son, but world number one goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez proved exactly why he'd been given the award two years running when he saved from point blank range. You'd have bet your house on Son to score there and it's one the skipper knows he really should have done better with.
Half time and Spurs go into the break a goal down, which to be fair after conceding so early isn't the worst thing in the world, a lot of other teams in many situations would have very easily crumbled. Postecoglou would have still been demanding a lot more for the second half. There were large periods where Spurs played themselves into danger and failed to really get a hold of the game.
Spurs would make a change at half time, with Moore being replaced by Yves Bissouma, pushing Kulusevski out wide and to try and win some more physical battles in the midfield. Moore can probably feel a bit hard done by being taken off, considering he created Spurs' only real chance of the first half, but I understand the thinking of Postecoglou.
Ramsey had hey another chance when he was played through one on one but Kinský was there again and now you could argue he's keeping Spurs in the tie at this point, despite his error early on in the game. Spurs had improved in the second half and pressed higher but this is what Villa thrive off if they are able to beat it.
Just past the hour mark, Villa would double their lead, after some good strength by Malen to hold off Bissouma, he played it into Bailey where he back-heeled it back to Malen down the line, he drilled it across the face of goal where Porro tried his best to clear but it fell straight to Rogers from a few yards to tap home. Shocking defending yet again from Spurs and deservedly 2-0 down.
Villa would then immediately sub on the two loan signings of Marcos Asensio and Marcus Rashford, with the latter playing for another club other than Manchester United for the first time in his life. Villa were really beginning to take the mickey out of Spurs, with the crowd shouting 'olay' every time they passed the ball to one another.
Shortly after it should have been three, and Ramsey really should have yet again added to his opener. Spurs once again way too easy to play through and the Villa academy graduate was put one on on, but his effort was saved by Kinský. He could've and probably should've squared it to Asensio and it would have been game over if it already wasn't.
Spurs should have punished Ramsey for his miss as just moments later Kevin Danso skied his shot over the bar from close range after Porro drilled it across into an area. The Austrian really should have been on the score sheet in a Spurs shirt for the first time, and it would have given his side some hope with about fifteen minutes to play.
Just as the game approached stoppage time Spurs finally would have some hope. Kulusevski puts in a brilliant cross to the back post and it would be met by Tel who just guided his volley into the corner back where it came from for his first goal as a Lilywhite.
It however, wouldn't be enough for Spurs, showing you cannot just turn up in the second half and give yourself an uphill battle all the time. Spurs again shooting themselves in the foot from the off and Villa worthy of their win. A terrible week for the Lilywhites exiting both cups and now it's Europa League or bust if they want to be successful and win some silverware this season. Spurs now turn their attention to a home game against Manchester United and then an away game at Ipswich where they'll need to fix their league form.
