On Sunday evening, Spurs looked to get back to winning ways on the South Coast, as they faced bottom of the league Southampton on the road for match day sixteen of the Premier League season.
For the task at hand, Ange opted for an XI of; Forster; Spence, Dragusin, Gray, Udogie; Sarr, Bergvall, Maddison; Kulusevski, Solanke, Son.
Ange’s side needed fewer than 40 seconds to take the lead. Superb ball carrying from Spence allowed him to run through the middle of the pitch, before playing a superb weighted through ball to Maddison, who fired home when one-on-one.
Worth mentioning, that straight after the goal - the away end began singing about wanting Daniel Levy out, which continued throughout the game. Great to see.
After 12 minutes, Spurs had two. Great work from Maddison and Spence to beat the press lead to a cross from the former, which found Son via Jan Bednarek. The skipper fired in low at the far post to double the lead.
Barely two minutes later, it was three. Down the left, Son managed to get a cross into the box towards Solanke, with the loose ball falling to Kulusevski who just had to tap home from very close range.
After around 17 minutes, Southampton had their first opportunity. An outside foot cross from Tyler Dibling found Adam Armstrong inside the area, but his header was straight at Forster.
We had played just 25 minutes when it became 4-0. Son played the ball across for Sarr on the edge of the box, who weaved his way through a couple of challenges before slotting into the corner with his left foot.
With just over ten minutes of the first period remaining, a Maddison pass on the break found Son, whose effort was tipped over the bar by Alex McCarthy.
Five minutes later, Southampton really should have been on the scoresheet, as Armstrong struck wide when really well placed inside the box. Let off for Spurs.
There would, incredibly, time for another goal before half-time. In the final seconds of stoppage time, an outside foot pass from Son found Maddison in the box, who cut inside and fired a shot right into the top corner from a tight angle.
The first few seconds of the half, and final few seconds of the half ended in a Maddison goal. 5-0 to Spurs at half time.
At the break, Ange looked to his bench— as he introduced Johnson for Son. The Welshman and Maddison were both booked within the first 15 minutes of the second half.
With a little under a quarter of an hour remaining, Werner and Dorrington replaced Maddison and Spence. The Spurs number ten gave Forster the armband before going on.
That would be that, and Spurs would win 5-0, thanks to five goals in the first half. In truth, quite a dull second half. Still, whether by design or accidental, did feel convenient to preserve some energy in this intense schedule. It certainly felt like a conscious choice, with a huge game in midweek. COYS.
