Following a disappointing 2-2 draw against Parma in which the Nerazzurri totally collapsed after having failed to keep hold of a two-goal advantage, Inter bounce back with conviction in sealing all three points against Cagliari, keeping them well on course towards reclaiming a second consecutive scudetto.
With the former Lazio coach’s side set to face Bayern Munich mid-week in the second leg of the Champions League quarter-finals, heavy rotations were made in an attempt in obtaining results across all fronts.
The Italian tactician’s preparation and squad selection was seemingly accurate, as the Nerazzurri came onto to the pitch with superb speed and tempo.
Veteran Marko Arnautovic broke the dead-lock, keeping his composure within the box as he weaved around his markers following a sublime touch, bringing down Brazilian wing-back Carlos Augusto’s chested lay-off, and buried the ball with a stunning strike.
The Austrian proved pivotal again, dispatching a marvellous through-ball into space after spotting a perfectly-timed run from skipper Lautauro Martinez, in which he dragged his marker within and left him dumbfounded as shifted into over-take mode within his blind-spot. The Argentine doubled the Biscione’s advantage, scoring his third goal in five games across all competitions.
Although Inter were left stunned in the beginning of the second half as Cagliari found the back of the net with a towering header from Roberto Piccoli, German defender Yann Aurel Bisseck responded in fine fashion, heading home a brilliantly taken corner from Federico Dimarco to double his side’s advantage and see out the fixture.
The vital win finds Inter leading the pack with a six point gap between themselves and Napoli, with the Partenopei possessing a game in-hand as they are set to face Empoli Monday evening at the Stadio Maradonna.
