Calderón 54′; Márquez 28′, 44′

Márquez opened the scoring in the 28th minute, cleaning up a spilled ball by Chivas goalkeeper Miguel Jiménez with an open net finish, forced over after his Atlas team-mate Julián Quiñones drove towards goal down the left side of the box.

He then added a second at the stroke of half-time, getting on the end of a bouncing ball in the box before coolly controlling and finishing with one kick of his right boot.

Chivas would answer back early in the second half, as Cristian Calderón scored from a corner kick with a turn-and-fire shot through goalkeeper Camilo Vargas’ legs.

The comeback would fall just short, even as Miguel Ángel Ponce picked up an 86th-minute red card, only for the decision to be reversed by VAR.

The result is a bitter pill to swallow for Chivas, who will take umbrage at losing their home fixture ahead of the return leg at the Estadio Jalisco on Sunday (7PM ET).

Sure, away goals do not factor into the Liguilla any longer, but the sting of losing to your local rival won’t be soothed by that fact entirely, either.
