Arsenal Edge Manchester United in Tense Premier League Opener at Old Trafford

Manchester United began their Premier League campaign with a performance that showed promise but ended in frustration, as Arsenal claimed a 1-0 victory at Old Trafford. Riccardo Calafiori’s first-half goal proved decisive, yet the story of the afternoon was as much about the hosts’ missed opportunities as the visitors’ resilience.

Costly Error Undermines Manchester United Progress

Ruben Amorim handed Altay Bayindir a starting role in goal due to Andre Onana’s injury absence, but the Turkish international’s misjudgement shaped the game. In the 13th minute, Declan Rice curled a corner under the crossbar and Bayindir could only palm the ball on to Calafiori, who converted from close range.

It was a cruel moment for a United side who otherwise showed greater sharpness than for much of last season. Amorim’s men pressed high, created space with direct passes and dominated possession. Yet, when the finishing touch was required, they found Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya in outstanding form. The Spaniard denied Matheus Cunha on three separate occasions and pulled off a superb save from Bryan Mbeumo to preserve Arsenal’s lead.

Arsenal’s New Look Tested at Old Trafford

Mikel Arteta’s side introduced £64m striker Viktor Gyokeres, but the Sweden international found his Premier League debut a struggle. Returning to full training only recently, Gyokeres lacked sharpness and was replaced by Kai Havertz after the hour. His physicality was evident in brief flashes, yet it will take time before he fully integrates into Arsenal’s new attacking system.

Despite defensive uncertainty at times, Arsenal found enough organisation to withstand United’s pressure. Calafiori’s willingness to step forward from defence created attacking options, though it occasionally left spaces that United looked to exploit. Raya’s saves, combined with United’s profligacy, ensured Arsenal secured their fifth win in six league meetings with their rivals.

Manchester United Positives Overshadowed by Result

Amorim left Old Trafford with applause ringing in his ears, a sign supporters recognised the improved intent on show. Casemiro dictated play from deep, Patrick Dorgu impressed on the left, and Matthijs de Ligt offered authority in central defence. United recorded 20 shots, their highest against Arsenal in the Premier League since 2011, yet failed to score.

Statistics will provide little comfort to a manager who has now suffered 15 defeats in his first 28 league games, a figure that raises uncomfortable questions about progress. In elite football, results matter most, and while United displayed energy and aggression, they were again left empty-handed.

Arsenal Celebrate, United Reflect

For Arsenal, the three points matter more than the manner of the performance. Arteta will know his side have areas to refine, but winning at Old Trafford on opening weekend is significant. Manchester United can take encouragement from their display, yet without greater efficiency in front of goal and more authority in key moments, they risk another season defined by what might have been.
