Barcelona could receive a major boost ahead of their upcoming league match against Osasuna, as Uruguay national team coach Marcelo Bielsa could rest Ronald Araujo for the team’s next fixture against Bolivia.
This potential decision would allow the defender to return to Spain earlier than expected, giving Barcelona a much-needed defensive reinforcement for a crucial match.
Uruguay recently suffered a narrow 0-1 defeat against Argentina, a result that has put pressure on Bielsa’s squad ahead of their clash with Bolivia.
However, despite the importance of the game, Bielsa is weighing the possibility of releasing some European-based players, which could include Araujo.
“We already know that playing at altitudes above 4,000 meters, not even in La Paz, increases the difficulty of a match, but surely players who played against Argentina won’t be playing, some will, others won’t,” said Bielsa.
For Araujo, this would mean arriving in Spain in time to participate in the postponed La Liga match against Osasuna on March 27.

Barcelona had been anxiously awaiting Bielsa’s decision, as the club had maintained contact with the Uruguayan football federation regarding the defender’s availability.
If Bielsa opts to release him, Araujo would avoid accumulating excessive minutes and be fresh for Barcelona’s domestic commitments.
Barcelona’s defensive options have been stretched thin in recent weeks, making Araujo’s potential return even more significant. Veteran defender Inigo Martinez is likely to miss the Osasuna fixture due to injury, leaving a gap in the defensive line.
Additionally, young centre-back Pau Cubarsi sustained a knock against the Netherlands. His availability remains uncertain, adding to the defensive worries for Barcelona.
With these setbacks, Araujo’s presence would be invaluable for Barcelona. The Uruguayan is one of the most reliable figures in the backline, offering both defensive solidity and leadership.
If he is cleared to return early from international duty, it would provide Hansi Flick’s side with a key advantage heading into a critical phase of the season.
