West Ham 0 Newcastle 1 – Monday 10 March 8pm
A massive well done to Eddie Howe and his players.
This is a huge performance and result for so many reasons.
Newcastle easily the better team tonight against a very negative West Ham side AND our lot really toughed it out.
The nerves were clearly showing at times as everybody knew how big this game was, at times the wrong decisions made and/or passes too strong or too weak.
However, overall, a great 90+ minutes in the context of what this could lead to.
I would bet anything you want that Eddie Howe’s checklist had at the top, the win. Then very close behind that, a clean sheet AND no injuries AND no red cards.
With a bit more composure Newcastle could for sure have made it easier for themselves towards the end, as West Ham finally opened up, going from having no strikers to too many strikers.
I thought Bruno, Tonali and Joelinton were all very good, in that order.
Nick Pope excellent as he dealt with the odd shot and at least as importantly, came out bravely for crosses and when it comes to sweeping behind his defence, he was excellent as always. That sweeping part is something that’s a massive weakness for Dubravka.
It was the first NUFC clean sheet in six games and only two in the last ten, the only other one in this run was the 2-0 at St James’ Park against Arsenal that took Newcastle to the final.
None of the pundits had Newcastle winning this, don’t let them forget. It was all about Graham Potter getting West Ham sorted with clean sheets and wins over Leicester at home and Arsenal away.
Eddie Howe’s side defended well overall and nobody in the away colours was hiding.
Bruno led by example and only fitting he scored the winner and got man of the match, scoring from Barnes’ clever ball.
This if a significant moment in Newcastle’s season for me.
Newcastle now up to sixth, level on points with Man City who are fifth, two points off Chelsea in fourth. Eddie Howe’s side have 17 days after the Carabao Cup Final to refresh and regroup for a run of four matches, with three at home and one away at Leicester, where points are there for the taking if on form.
Speaking of Wembley…this performance and result was key to giving ourselves the best chance of success against Liverpool on Sunday. Some renewed confidence and momentum to build for that chance of silverware, let’s all give it everything on the pitch and on the terraces, it could just be our season…
