Manchester United have been dealt a blow in their pursuit of Jadon Sancho, with the winger unprepared to hand in a transfer request to force through a move away from Borussia Dortmund.

The transfer saga of the summer has taken a new turn with Dortmund insistent the player will remain at the Bundesliga side next season, Man United having missed the club’s deadline in which to complete a deal.

Widespread reports had indicated that a deal was all but formality just a week ago with speculation that Sancho had agreed personal terms at Old Trafford, but a move appears no closer with Dortmund refusing to budge on their £108m valuation of the England international.

Sancho is keen to return to the Premier League after three seasons in German football but, according to German publication Bild, will not force through his exit from the Westfalenstadion, a situation which leaves United’s hopes of securing a potentially British transfer-record signing in jeopardy at present.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have made the signing of Sancho their number one priority this summer, but despite weeks of speculation and reported negotiations, are yet to lodge a formal bid for his services.

The ongoing uncertainty surrounding the club’s move for the 20-year-old will leave fans questioning the Red Devils’ hierarchy, their focus – and lack of conviction – in signing Sancho raising doubts over the club’s recruitment plans once more.

Sancho’s representatives have also reportedly been left unimpressed by United’s leaking to the media over the demands of his personal terms, the Premier League side revealing their frustrations over the player’s salary and agents fees as they bid to secure a deal.

Sancho is currently training alongside his Dortmund teammates at a pre-season training camp in Switzerland and – unlike former Dortmund stars Ousmane Dembele and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – appears happy to remain with the side for the immediate future, the youngster aware he is likely to have the pick of Europe’s leading sides next summer as football’s finances recover from the coronavirus pandemic.
