Liverpool have been dealt another massive blow following the news that Jordan Henderson could miss the remainder of the season with the midfielder ruled out for up to four months with a groin injury.

Henderson was substituted during the first half of Liverpool’s 2-0 Merseyside Derby defeat to Everton last weekend and his adductor issue has now handed Jurgen Klopp another huge headache.

Liverpool’s title defence has been ravaged by a succession of injuries with senior centre-back options in Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip ruled out for lengthy periods, with Henderson and fellow midfielder Fabinho having deputised in unfamiliar deeper roles.

According to the Daily Mail, there are now fears that Henderson could miss up to four months as he waits to discover whether his injury will require surgery in what would represent a major setback to the Reds’ hopes of securing a top four finish.

The 30-year-old’s participation at this summer’s European Championships could also be in doubt with the tournament set for June, and Gareth Southgate will be another anxiously awaiting further news on Henderson’s fitness.

Liverpool will now be without their captain as they bid to arrest a concerning run of form, the defeat to Everton their fourth consecutive league loss and fourth in succession at Anfield.

Klopp’s side visit Sheffield United in the Premier League this weekend before a midweek date with Chelsea, and the Reds are set to see their options boosted in the coming weeks with Fabinho, Naby Keita and Diogo Jota all nearing first-team returns.
