AC Milan sporting director Ricky Massara has admitted that the Europa League now represents the ‘minimum objective’ for the club at present.

The Rossoneri have amassed just 32 points from their opening 23 league games of the season, winning only nine games and finding themselves 13 points back of Atalanta in fourth place prior to Monday’s game against Torino.

Milan have enjoyed a transformation in fortunes since Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s arrival at the beginning of the year as they have lost just one game in all competitions, but that was a damaging 4-2 defeat to Inter.

Massara spoke to Sky Italia before the game against il Toro, and his words were transcribed by MilanNews.it.

“The Europa League would represent the minimum objective we set for ourselves,” Massara said.

“Milan’s natural habitat is Europe, we know it’ll take time to get back into the Champions League, but we believe that we are on the right track to achieve those heights again.”

As qualifying for the Champions League is getting more difficult by the week, the rumours of which manager will replace Stefano Pioli at Milan have started.

A number of names have been linked such as Ralf Rangnick, Marcelino and Max Allegri, but Massara has echoed the words of fellow director Paolo Maldini by showing faith in Pioli.

“We are happy with the work Pioli is doing, he is giving a clear shape to this squad, a pro-active style of football and we really believe that we are on the right track.”
