Mason Mount has made himself such a fixture in the Chelsea team since coming back to the club from his loans that it already feels like he’s been around for a decade.

But in an interview for the official Chelsea website today he reminds us all that he was at the last World Cup as an invitee of the FA, to watch the senior team.

In the time since then he’s established himself as a key player for Chelsea and a regular for England, and he will go to this edition of the tournament as a real option for Gareth Southgate.

“The World Cup is what you dream of as a kid. It’s soon going to be upon us, and I can’t really put it into words that first game. I was lucky enough to be watching it in Russia as a fan. To feel that atmosphere and to hopefully be involved in it is going to be an unbelievable moment for us all,” Mount said in quotes on the club’s official website.

“We need to stick together that is the most important thing. We showed in the second half that we can do that going forward.”

The rise of Jude Bellingham in recent months, combined with the Dortmund star’s brilliant showing last night against Germany, means that Mount is probably just outside the starting XI thinking for Gareth Southgate right now.

But as Mount’s goal at Wembley showed, he’s a real danger off the bench, and in a hectic tournament, he’s sure to get a chance to show what he can do over 90 minutes, and in doing so fulfil some more of his childhood dreams,
