FBRef’s player comparison tool is a fun way to see how various Chelsea stars are doing this, and this evening we’ve stumbled on a pretty interesting one.
Mason Mount is having a poor season, apparently, but his numbers stack up very positively compared to Kevin de Bruyne, the benchmark for attack minded midfielders in the league.
Both have made 5 starts, with just a minute’s difference in playing time in the Premier League, creating a fair basis.
Mount has 3 goals to KdB’s 2. The Chelsea man also wins on assists, 2-0.
He’s got twice as many tackles (6-3), has won more of his aerial duels, and more progressive carries of the ball. Almost everywhere you look, Mason is level or ahead.
It’s not proof that Mount is a better player, just a reminder that our standards for him have become extremely high. If he’s competing with the league’s very best in a season where he’s started slowly, that’s good enough for us.
