When a player misses a game due to “illness”, it tends to just be a cold, and it’s often just a precautionary absence to stop the problem spreading to his teammates.
Mason Mount was ruled out for the Newcastle game last weekend in similar circumstances, and even when he missed the game on Tuesday against Malmo, it seemed possible he was just being rested.
But Thomas Tuchel’s injury report today revealed that this is actually a wisdom tooth issue, and Mount may need surgery.
“It’s a tricky one. Mason was ill but the reason was his wisdom tooth, this was the reason for the feeling, a bit of an infection,” Tuchel explained in quotes carried by Football.London.
“He was back in training and lost a bit of weight as he couldn’t eat properly. He takes medication and let’s see. He is in the squad for tomorrow, can play some minutes, but we will need to wait for the reaction because it seems proper treatment has to be done.”
It sounds like he will get some minutes against Burnley tomorrow, but as a substitute, or perhaps starting and coming off after an hour.
Tuchel was also very reluctant to confirm whether his charge would be going to join up with the England squad, despite his selection. It sounds like it will all depend on the surgery, and how quickly and effectively it can be performed.
Either way, this is not the game off with a cold we usually see.
