Very few Premier League youngsters can be put on a par with Manchester United’s Mason Greenwood, although Manchester City’s Phil Foden makes a strong case.

After struggling to establish himself under Pep Guardiola over the past couple of years, the 20-year-old made his senior breakthrough this season.

Leroy Sane’s departure for Bayern Munich last summer paved the way for the mercurial playmaker to become a permanent fixture at the Etihad Stadium.

The English sensation has racked up 13 goals and nine assists across all competitions this term, eclipsing Greenwood’s tally of nine strikes and six set-ups.

Foden has been in stellar form in the Champions League, scoring three and assisting two, including two strikes in each of City’s quarter-final legs against Borussia Dortmund.

Although Greenwood plays in a more advanced position, the United starlet has had to share the scoring stakes with the likes of Marcus Rashford, Edinson Cavani and Bruno Fernandes this term.

Elsewhere, the absence of Sergio Aguero and Raheem Sterling’s dip in form have allowed Foden to soak up the limelight as one of City’s most productive players in 2020/21.

Both technically gifted on the ball and left-footed, the English stars in the making are wasting no time establishing themselves as household names in the Premier League.

Although Foden already has six international caps under his belt, Greenwood’s recent upturn in form should earn him a place in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the upcoming European Championships.

The Red Devils whizzkid has so far made just a single appearance for the national team at the senior level, but everything he has done in the recent period suggests he will be the next big thing in English football.

Foden has a lot to offer in his team’s build-up play, given his vision and pinpoint passing, although he lacks a killer instinct.

Meanwhile, Greenwood’s shrewd movements in between the lines and his desire to score make him a real threat going forward.

And while he made his opponents wary of his devastating left foot, the prodigious forward has shown that he can be equally lethal on his weaker side.

Tottenham keeper Hugo Lloris got to see Greenwood’s thunderous right foot at work first-hand when United staged a second-half comeback in London a week ago.

Foden is 16 months older than Greenwood, so a direct comparison at such a young age is tough, but if Greenwood continues to develop we will be hearing much more about him as the next great English hope.
