Earlier this week, Manchester United’s young winger Mason Greenwood gave his take on football’s most asked question: Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo.

In an interview with Manchester Evening News, the English forward was asked the ever-burning question to which he replied, “Messi or Ronaldo? For me, it’s always got to be Messi. For me, he’s just on another planet.”

It was a surprising answer coming from a Manchester United player, a club that was home to the Portuguese talisman for six seasons.

Greenwood went on to add “Ronaldo is obviously amazing, a physical, great athletic footballer. But to do what Messi does at his size, what he’s done for Barcelona and winning that trophy for Argentina, he is just on another level.”

Though his choice may be surprising from the point of view of the club he represents, a deeper thought throws some light. In many ways, Greenwood is a player who can relate to Lionel Messi on multiple levels.

Not only is he an academy graduate of the club he adores but is also a left-footed winger much like the six-time Balon d’Or winner. With dribbling being a major part of his game too, Lionel Messi, who is one of the best in the business, is unsurprisingly his idol.

Moreover, as a player from the academy of his club, he realises the greatness it takes to continue shining at the highest level despite constant changes in personnel through the years.

This goes down as yet another member of the football community who picked the Barcelona captain without hesitation. The list keeps on growing.

Lionel Messi is currently on holiday after his Copa America victory. He will return to training towards to end of the preseason.
